Mossberg's 590 Persuader scaled down to .410 bore: a short slide-action gun built for the house, current production, serial V0948524. The tube measures 18.75 inches and takes 2.5-inch or 3-inch shells. Up front sits a bright fiber-optic bead; the steel is matte black and the furniture is black textured polymer, stock and forend both, with a 14-inch pull. Inside the barrel it grades excellent, the outside carries a few light marks from handling, and the whole gun rates very good.

A .410 pump this short suits the person who finds a 12-gauge too much: a smaller shooter, a recoil-shy family member, or anyone who wants a light shotgun by the bed in a Columbia apartment. The 14-inch stock is cut for exactly those people. The glowing bead picks up fast in a dim hallway, and the black polymer and matte steel shrug off the humidity with little upkeep.
