SIG P224: Specs and What to Know

The short answer
The SIG Sauer P224 is a subcompact, double-stack, hammer-fired pistol built as a shortened version of the P229 and P226 family. It has a 3.5-inch barrel, a decocking lever instead of a manual safety, and it has been offered in 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG. People search for it as a compact carry pistol with a metal frame.

SAS and other versions
The SAS (anti-snag) version has a recessed hammer and a dehorned slide and frame so it is less likely to catch on clothing. Some versions use a double-action-kellerman (DAK) trigger instead of the standard DA/SA. Look at the model name in a listing to see which one you are getting.
What to check before you buy
- The caliber and the capacity: a .40 S&W or .357 SIG P224 holds fewer rounds than the 9mm.
- The trigger type (DA/SA or DAK) and the sights (some versions have night sights).
- That you know how to use the decocking lever; there is no manual safety.
- How many magazines come with it.
Buying
A pistol is a complete firearm, so it ships to a licensed dealer (FFL) in your state, where you complete the paperwork and background check.
