How to Buy a Gun Online in South Carolina
Columbia Gun Rack ships rifles, handguns, shotguns and ammunition across South Carolina, with every firearm sent to the licensed FFL dealer you choose. This guide explains how an online order becomes a dealer transfer and what South Carolina rules apply at the counter.
How ordering online and shipping to a local dealer works
You order here, then pick a licensed dealer in South Carolina at checkout. We ship the firearm to that dealer, not to your home, and the dealer holds it until you pick it up. The steps are:
- Place your order and choose the licensed dealer you want to use.
- We ship the firearm to that dealer.
- At pickup you show photo ID and complete ATF Form 4473.
- The dealer runs the federal NICS background check.
- When the check comes back as proceed, you take the firearm home.
Ammunition, optics and most parts ship to your door. Firearms always go through a licensed dealer.
What the South Carolina rules say
South Carolina has no permit to purchase, no firearm registry and no state waiting period. At a licensed dealer you show photo ID, fill out ATF Form 4473 and the dealer runs a federal NICS background check. A current South Carolina concealed weapons permit is accepted by many dealers in place of that check.
Federal law sets the dealer minimum age at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns. State law bars handing a handgun to anyone under 18. Private sales between residents need no state background check, but selling to a person you know cannot legally own a gun is a crime.
Since the Constitutional Carry Act took effect on March 7, 2024, anyone 18 or older who may lawfully possess a firearm can carry it openly or concealed without a permit, and may store a firearm anywhere in a vehicle. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) still issues the concealed weapons permit, and many people keep one for reciprocity in other states and for quicker dealer purchases. Carry stays barred in schools, courthouses, polling places, detention facilities, daycares, hospitals and doctors' offices, government meetings, places of worship without permission, and any property posted with a compliant sign.
For hunting, South Carolina is split into four game zones. The Midlands and the Lowcountry sit in Game Zone 3, where deer season on private land runs August 15 to January 1. Game Zone 4 in the Pee Dee opens later for guns, so check the SCDNR season dates. Game Zones 1 and 2 in the Upstate open later in the fall; season dates vary by year, so check the current SCDNR regulations. Any legal firearm may be used for deer. Every deer must be tagged, and the harvest goes into SC Game Check by midnight.

Shooting and hunting in South Carolina
SCDNR runs public ranges at Eastover, Awendaw, Pauline, Liberty, Kinards and Garnett, and the Forest Service keeps rifle ranges on the Sumter and Francis Marion national forests. Call ahead, because hours change with the season and with scheduled hunts.
Most deer shots in South Carolina pine woods and hardwood bottoms fall inside 200 yards, so the .243, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270, 7mm-08, .308 and .30-06 all do the job. For ducks, a 12- or 20-gauge pump or semi-auto plugged to three shells, loaded with non-toxic shot, works well. You need a hunting license, the state migratory bird permit, HIP certification and a federal duck stamp. Feral hogs can be taken year-round on private land with the landowner's permission. Night hunting and wildlife management area rules are tighter, so read the current SCDNR regulations before you go.
