A Mossberg 500 pump in 20 gauge from the 1970s, serial D39959. The barrel is 28 inches with a fixed modified choke and a 3-inch chamber. It is a field configuration with a wood stock, and both the finish and the wood are graded excellent; the bore is excellent too.
A modified-choke 20-gauge is the gun a lot of South Carolina shooters started on and a lot of adults still carry for doves and squirrels. It is light enough for a long walk and the 3-inch chamber allows heavier loads when needed. Because the state permits any legal firearm for deer, a 500 like this also works for a close-range stand in the Midlands pines from August 15 with the right load. Pumps of this age in excellent condition are not common; this one has been looked after.
