Fine Pair of English Flintlock Pistols

A matched pair of English flintlock pistols made around 1700 to 1720. Each has a three-stage barrel 12 inches long in .65 caliber, with an overall length of 19.75 inches. The barrels carry London proofs, crown CP and crown V. The lock tails are engraved with a panoply of arms and the name Pasual; no other maker's mark appears. Brass mounts are engraved and chiseled in high relief with drums, cannon, lances, banners and armor, the butt caps are formed as a man wearing an oak-leaf wreath, and the stocks are inlaid with a crowned royal device and a cameo of a plumed, helmeted figure.

The trigger guards are chiseled in relief and the side plates show fanciful figures in Rococo scrollwork with the same helmeted cameo. Both pistols are in excellent condition. The supplier suggests the missing maker's name may have been at the first owner's request. These are early collector pieces, not shooters, for a South Carolina buyer who collects English arms.
