U.S. Springfield Model 1866 2nd Allin Conversion Trapdoor Rifle .50-70

An original U.S. Springfield Model 1866, the second Allin conversion, built at Springfield Armory around 1866 to 1867 in .50-70 Government with a 40-inch round barrel. No serial number is present. The barrel has gone to a light grey patina with patches of mottled oxidation, the bore is oxidized but the rifling is still strong, and the stock was refurbished at some point and shows its years of service. The action holds on both half and full cock, though the mainspring is light.

The Model 1866 is the rifle that carried the Army from muzzleloader to cartridge: Civil War era muskets were altered with the Allin breech so they could fire a metallic round, and the converted guns stayed in U.S. service on the post-war frontier. For a South Carolina collector of U.S. martial arms it is a piece for the gun room rather than the stand, and at 40 inches of barrel it needs a long wall or a tall safe.
