Rare Japanese Shrine Sword

A Japanese shrine dedication sword, or hōnōtō, built in the oversized ōdachi style rather than as a fighting blade. The cutting edge measures 39.5 inches and the blade is 1.625 inches wide. Each side carries an inscription: one reading Respectfully Dedicated to Military Glory, the other Respectfully Dedicated to Kurahachi Shrine, with chrysanthemum crests beside the characters. The supplier describes it as a ceremonial piece of the kind offered at Shinto shrines, most often from the late Meiji era through the Shōwa era.

For a South Carolina collector of Japanese militaria or religious objects this is a wall or stand piece first, given its length and the imperial crests. It is sold as used in the condition the supplier describes, and no polish grade, mounts or papers are mentioned, so ask for detailed photographs of the inscriptions and the edge before you decide. The two dedications name both the shrine and the sentiment behind the offering, which gives the sword a documented purpose.
